Out of sheer boredom, Easter Weekend 1979 in San Francisco, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were born. Starting as queer guerilla street theatre drawing attention to the homogeneity of the Castro Community, the Sisters’ keen eye to a queerer future transformed them (through theatrical protest and the AIDS Crisis) into a spiritual/political/community organizing and fundraising force. You can read all of the Sistory of the San Francisco Order here: A Sistory, Blow by Blow
Fast forward over three-and-a-half decades later, the Order is world-wide and taking over the United States! In over 10 countries and over 30 chapters in the U.S.A. Sister Houses are doing the good work of Promulgating Universal Joy and Expiating Stigmatic Guilt. Check out the S.F. Sister’s listing of all the orders here: There Are Sisters Where?
